East Coast What-a-what?

Figure Artists.  Formerly known as the New England Kitbuilders Club, many members agreed that "Figure Artists" reflected better what most of us do, and makes us sound really suave and sophisticated.

Okay, maybe not, but "kitbuilders" has the connotation of guys putting together model airplanes, cars and tanks.  Most of our members are drawn to unpainted sculptures cast in resin and vinyl.  Most of these sculptures have been broken down into several pieces because of the casting process, so usually any number of preparation techniques is necessary before even painting the kit, such as cleanup, grinding down excess, pinning, gluing, puttying, priming, and so on.

In short, our members work with many genres, such as fantasy, sci-fi, horror, history, even natural history.  Interests and skills vary widely in this club.  Check out any of the member galleries to see samples of what we do.

Aren't you guys a little old for this?

Dunno.  Are we?  Model train enthusiasts can get on the older side, too, as well as military enthusiasts. For many, this isn't just a hobby, but a real career.  Art is art.  There are whole companies devoted to keeping this hobby a reality, as well as magazines, merchants, shows and contests, and on and on.  You have a stressful day at work and relax in front of the TV by painting a bust of your favorite movie monster.  Sounds like a good deal to us.

I used to make kits all the time as a kid, but outgrew it.  I'm not sure if I could start again.

We're just kids that kept on making kits, or moved on to different kinds of kits, as described above.  Anyone who's interested in getting back into the hobby, or even just to see what "kids" are doing these days, is welcome to attend a meeting or even a show (although shows tend not to be free to attend.  But no worse than a movie ticket).
